From Minsk comes Evening, a Belarusian stage classic reimagined by the Republican Theater of Belarusian Dramaturgy. A quiet meditation on time, solitude, and belonging, this minimalist production blends village life, folk songs, and symbolic stagecraft into a moving theatrical experience with Chinese and English surtitles.

Evening is adapted from the classic 1980s play by Belarusian playwright Alexei Dudarev, now considered a cornerstone of the nation’s modern repertoire. First staged as a reading, the work was brought to life in 2024 by the Republican Theater of Belarusian Dramaturgy (RTBD) as a full-scale production.

The play follows three elderly villagers living in quiet solitude. Their children have long since left, leaving them with little more than the land, the sky, and the voice of an old radio. On stage, everyday simplicity becomes deeply symbolic: cameras and projections create a sense of “gaze,” while suspended miniature tables suggest fleeting images of the village. Reality and illusion merge, transforming ordinary gestures into reflections on time, memory, and mortality.

Director and actors expand Dudarev’s lyrical writing into a philosophical dialogue, turning fragments of daily life into universal meditations on fate, life, and death.
